From moral realism to humanistic idealism (Narratology of the fifth anecdote in the seventh chapter of Golestan Saadi)

This study examines the narrative and ethical dynamics of the fifth anecdote in the seventh chapter of Saadi’s Gulestan, focusing on the story of the profligate pious son. Employing a narrative-semiotic analysis based on Greimas’s semiotic square, the research reveals a shift from moral realism to humanistic idealism. The tale initially presents as a cautionary moral lesson within Persian didactic literature, condemning the son’s extravagance. However, a deeper analysis uncovers a subversive counter-discourse where the son’s values generosity, temporal awareness, and rational reflection challenge the narrator’s prescriptive morality. The narrator’s authority, marked by judgment and eventual silence, is undermined by the son’s articulate defense, which repositions him as a proponent of relational ethics. This dual-layered narrative a surface moral tale and a meta-commentary on ethical storytelling invites readers to question rigid didacticism and embrace ethical complexity. The son’s humanistic idealism, rooted in social responsibility and existential authenticity, contrasts with the narrator’s focus on austerity and prudence. Saadi’s narrative brilliance lies in orchestrating this tension, creating a “narrative against the narrative” that fulfills yet subverts the moral tale’s conventions. This study highlights how Saadi transforms didactic literature into a dialogic, inclusive form, ensuring the Gulestan’s enduring relevance in addressing evolving moral and philosophical questions.
